In the Islamic tradition, Muslims are greatly encouraged to give in charity as a means of earning the pleasure of Allah (SWT).  There are various types of charity that a Muslim can perform throughout their lifetime, including Zakat and Zakat al-Fitr or Fitrana which are obligatory charity, and Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah which are voluntary forms of charity. These forms of charity, when performed sincerely for Allah’s (SWT) sake, can earn you reward in this life and the next.

Among the many blessings of Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) is that it can be performed on behalf of another Muslim. Many Muslims wish to do this on specific occasions, such as if someone has passed away or has fallen ill.

Being able to perform Sadaqah for someone who is not able is a very beautiful blessing bestowed on us by our Maker, Al-Ra’oof, the Most Kind. Scholars have derived our ability to perform Sadaqah on behalf of someone who is ill from hadith.

It is permissible for a sick person to give charity in order to repel the illness from him, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

Treat your sick people by giving charity.

Hadith | At-Tabari and Al-Bayhaqi

Suffering from an illness, whether it be minor, mild, or severe, can be one of the most challenging experiences as a human – it can test our patience and faith in Allah (SWT). It is common for someone who is either suffering with an illness or caring for someone who is ill to offer Sadaqah from a place of reflection, realising the health that they had before they fell ill makes them grateful to Allah (SWT) and compassionate towards others who are in need. Based on the hadith above, many also offer Sadaqah to earn the Shifaah (cure/healing) of Allah (SWT), may Allah (SWT) accept it from us and grant Shifaah to all in need, Ameen.
