The concept of charity in Islam is vast and takes on numerous forms. It can be both obligatory and voluntary, monetary, and something even more abstract.

Zakat and Zakat al-Fitr or Fitrana are forms of obligatory charity which are monetary donations, whilst Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah are voluntary forms of charity that can be donated as money but can also be accepted as donations of time, beneficial knowledge, building schools and more. When these acts of charity are performed sincerely for Allah’s (SWT) sake, you are seeking the reward of this life and the next.

Among the many blessings of Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) is that it can be performed on behalf of another Muslim after they have passed away.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) confirmed this in a number of strong hadith, including the following:

It was narrated in al-Saheehayn from ‘Aa’ishah (RA) that a man said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “My mother died suddenly, and she did not leave a will, but I think that if she could have spoken, she would have given in charity. Will she have a reward if I give in charity on her behalf?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Yes."

The status of parents in Islam is so high that any good act towards them for Allah’s (SWT) sake can earn bountiful rewards.

And We have commanded people to honour their parents. Their mothers bore them through hardship upon hardship, and their weaning takes two years. So be grateful to Me and your parents. To Me is the final return.

Qur’an | 31:14

By donating Sadaqah on your parents’ behalf, you share in the reward of the charity donated between yourself, your mother, and your father. Therefore, an ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) such as providing a water well to those in need, providing education to or building a school for students, or sponsoring an orphan in need can be an extremely beneficial means of reward for you and your parents in this life and the next.

Sadaqah Jariyah ideas on behalf of your parents

Planting a tree

Any sustenance that the tree provides to another (animal, human), any shade that it provides to the one in need or used in another form whatsoever may be counted as a Sadaqah Jariyah for you and your parents.

Building a school

Any beneficial knowledge that is shared in a school, any shelter that the building provides to another (animal, human), or any prosperity that is generated for another through the education provided in that building will earn a reward for yourself and your parents.

Cleaning and cultivating your environment

Cleaning a polluted water source or cultivating a piece of land will earn you and your parents a reward for every insect, animal or human being that benefits from it in any way.

Providing a water source

Building a well, buying a fountain or providing a clean source of water for those in need will be counted as Sadaqah Jariyah for you and your parents every time one benefits from that water – often for generations to come.

Donating towards or building a mosque

Every good act performed in a mosque you donate towards the maintenance or building of, will be counted as a reward for you and your parents – imagine how much Salah, Dhikr, beneficial knowledge and more may be apportioned for you as a reward, subhanAllah!
