Building resilience to poverty

Reaching the most vulnerable in the UK

A staggering 1 in 5 people in the UK are living in poverty. Unable to heat their homes, keep up with mortgage or rental payments or maintain a healthy varied diet, they’re struggling to support themselves and their families.

At Islamic Relief UK, we recognise the increasing needs of communities at home. We’re working with a range of national and local partners to reach the most vulnerable in the UK and build resilience against poverty to ensure that no one goes hungry, cold or neglected.

CRISIS: ROUTES OUT OF HOMELESSNESS

Working with the national homeless charity, Crisis, we’re assisting homeless and vulnerably housed people in East London by providing a range of key support including:

  • One-to-one coaching: Offering key support on areas such as interview techniques and task-focussed action planning
  • Learning for skills and employment: Providing training in a range of areas including ICT, literacy and ESOL
  • Mental health and wellbeing services: Hosting workshops and groups on key areas including anxiety, stress management and mindfulness in order to improve confidence and self-esteem
  • Employment services: Developing skills through CV writing assistance, arranging mock-interviews and providing advice on volunteering placements

The project enables vulnerable people aged 16 and over to work their way into safer housing, employment and lead physically, socially, psychologically and economically safer lives.

GREEN LANE MOSQUE: WELFARE SERVICES

We’re working in partnership with Green Lane Mosque in Birmingham to deliver various projects to support the wider community. The projects will engage young people, providing safe spaces and activities to reduce youth crime and violence. They are also providing social activities for the elderly to improve their health and wellbeing.

Various activities will support the community, including:

  • Elderly lunch club
  • Coffee mornings
  • Foodbank
  • Boys football
  • Thai boxing
  • Anti-violence workshops
  • Youth club
  • Online support groups

All of these activities will provide the local community around Green Lane Masjid with access to critical free services, meeting the growing needs of the community.

SUFRA NW LONDON: ST. RAPHAEL’S EDIBLE FOOD GARDEN

In the London borough of Brent, poverty is at an all-time high. On St. Raphael’s Estate for example, with high numbers of children affected by poverty, and the area has some of the lowest levels of educational attainment across the country.

With the wider impact of deprivation aggravating racial tensions and the area’s reputation for gang violence and anti-social behaviour, Islamic Relief teamed up with Sufra NW London to support the St. Raphael’s Edible Food Garden.

Working in the most deprived area of Brent, this food-growing project provides an outdoor community space that supports in the skills development, employability, health and wellbeing of local people.

Improving the appearance of the estate and challenging its notorious reputation for gang-related violence and anti-social behaviour, the project ensures that communities are better supported socially and economically through improved support networks and community bonding, as well as supplying the Sufra Food Bank with produce.
