Islamic Relief’s comment on the Budget

“Islamic Relief welcomes the Chancellor’s decision to keep Britain’s promise to spend 0.7% of national income on aid.

Islamic Relief has been able to see first-hand the positive difference UK aid is making around the world. About 870 million people – one in eight of the world’s population – go hungry every day. This decision will mean the UK can continue to play a leading role in fighting hunger and alleviating poverty across the world.

However, aid alone will not end hunger. As the current chair of the G8, the UK has the opportunity to take the fight against hunger to another level by ensuring that related problems poorer countries face, such as tax dodging and land grabbing by multinational companies, can also be addressed. We want to see leadership from the Prime Minister on these issues to welcome the commitment made on aid in today’s Budget.”
