Bosnia Floods

Four days of heavy rain has lead to disastrous floods across the northern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As a result, several towns such as Bihac, Bosanska Krupa, Cazin, Sanski Most, Velika Kladuša, Bosanski Novi and Kobaš have been severely effected and are experiencing heavy flooding – the highest levels seen in recent years.

A state of natural disaster has been declared in Una Sana Canton (Bihać and Bosanska Krupa). Approximately 10,000 individuals have been affected by the flooding and around 1,200 buildings in settlements of Una Sana Canton were flooded along with vast area of standing agricultural crops.

The population has not been evacuated and currently all areas have access to to drinking water and ration supplies. Although, there are fears that contamination of drinking water sources will soon occur which will make water unsafe for drinking.

Islamic Relief Bosnia and Herzegovina teams are working in coordination with representative of municipalities, in order to undertake needs assessment. Response efforts will be focused in Bihac and Bosanska Krupa. Our teams will be looking to distribute clean water, food, hygiene kits and blankets as well as helping affected communities to clean up and decontaminate their homes.
