Responding

Over the last two weeks, the southeastern regions of Bangladesh, particularly the hilly districts, have been encountering significant rainfall ranging from heavy to very heavy. This intensified rainfall is attributed to the active monsoon that commenced on August 5th, 2023.

Over 1.2 million individuals have been affected across the districts of Chattogram, Bandarban, Rangamati, and Cox’s Bazar. Among them are 636,445 men, 588,261 women, 426,773 children (aged 0-19 years), 67,981 elderly individuals (aged 65+), 16,479 pregnant and lactating mothers, and 17,772 persons with disabilities.

2,731 shelters were affected, with 215 of them being confirmed as completely damaged. The floods have resulted in significant destruction, including houses, crop fields, livestock, and fishponds being washed away by the floodwaters.

Islamic Relief’s response

Islamic Relief teams in Bangladesh are on the ground and responding to the floods. We are conducting joint needs assessments and are providing emergency temporary shelter materials to 122 households in three camps in Cox’s bazar, while emergency shelter repair and maintenance support is ongoing.

Our teams are well connected to various networks and agencies through our Crisis Management programme, allowing Islamic Relief to respond and reach victims quickly.
