5 Amazing Ways to Get the Most Out of Social Media this Ramadan

Alhamdullilah, the holy month of Ramadan is upon us again, and we have another opportunity to do good for the sake of Allah ﷻ and use this time for self-improvement.

Over the past decade, our world has experienced more change due to technological advancement than ever before and most people in the world now have access to a smartphone. Today, the use of social media has become a necessary daily activity. Social media is typically used for social interaction, but it’s also become a means for many of us to access news and information – which can inform our decision making…

It has become the reality of modern life. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, and while social media can sometimes be beneficial, it’s important to be aware that social media is associated with several issues and potential dangers, including stress, anxiety, loneliness, and depression. As we approach Ramadan, we’ve put together five essential tips you can follow to ensure you make the most out of the blessed month using social media:

1. Try not to consume too much information at once

One of the biggest problems we face as a society today is that we can now constantly follow and read about news from all over the world. Although this is very useful to many, misinformation, or overwhelming information, can be harmful to our thoughts. It can also be a big distraction during times where we want to be dedicating time elsewhere – such as the period of Ramadan. Make a habit to only read the news or use social media at specific times, for example after you’ve broken your fast. The month of Ramadan is only 29/30 days, so we must try to make the most of this blessed month!

2. Be careful with the content that you share

One of the greatest drawbacks of social media is the prevalence of pointless gossip, which can lead to the now commonplace practice of backbiting.

Since social media gives everyone an open platform to express themselves, a lot of what people post or share can be misleading or false information. Most people will share an article about a celebrity or someone famous without knowing all the facts, and we’re accountable for anyone we knowingly or unknowingly slander or backbite about – including the rich and famous…

3. Purify your intentions

As Muslims, we are taught that we should consider our Niyyah, or intentions, and make good intentions for everything that we do. This is not just something we should practice as part of our deen (faith) and hereafter, but also in our Dunya (this world, our worldly pursuits).

It’s important to ask ourselves: Why are we doing what we are doing? For what reason? Whom are we doing it for? Is it for praise? Is it because we want to be seen? Is it for the sake of Allah ﷻ?

Niyyah is an Islamic concept that is concerned with the intention of one’s heart to do an act for the sake of Allah ﷻ. Try to make the intention to use social media to increase your knowledge or share beneficial content with friends and family.

4. Be aware of what and who you are following

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him) said:

“Part of the perfection of one’s Islam is his leaving that which does not concern him.” Hadith | Tirmidhi

This is a simple, yet powerful principle. Before you follow an account or become ‘friends’ with someone on social media, how about asking yourself, “How is this account/person making me feel about myself?”, and “is this person going to benefit my religious status?”. Try to follow pages that increase your knowledge or benefit you spiritually.

5. Fundraise or raise awareness for causes

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him) said:

“Do not show lethargy or negligence in giving alms and charity till your last breath.”  Hadith | Bukhari and Muslim

If you are not able to donate to charity, you can use your platform to raise awareness about and fundraise for a cause close to your heart. Islamic Relief has developed ‘Do it for the Cause’ – a platform where you can create your own fundraising page for various causes including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Palestine, Syria and Yemen.

Your social media posts can become a place where your friends and family learn more about you and your chosen cause. They will also be able to contribute and stay updated on the progress of your fundraiser.

We pray that Allah ﷻ allows us all to reach Ramadan and accepts our efforts, Ameen.
