Earthquake in central region of Japan

Monitoring

An earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred on the 1st of January 2024, with continued tremors.

The powerful earthquake struck Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on Japan’s western coastline, triggering waves over a metre high and prompting tsunami alerts, and warnings for people to evacuate. Although the tsunami warnings have now been downgraded to a tsunami advisory, smaller earthquakes and tremors continue in the area.

According to the latest reports, the earthquake has resulted in 48 deaths.

There are reports of widespread damage to buildings and roads.

The authorities urged residents of impacted areas not to return to their homes until they are declared safe and many people have moved into schools and other public buildings.

The Japanese army and search and rescue teams have been deployed to the earthquake affected zone to assist with relief efforts.

Islamic Relief will continue to monitor the situation.
